The manner in which illumination and shadow reveal and hide form is fascinating to me. Negative and positive spaces, light and shadow, clarify and obscure; moods change literally with the wind. The ephemeral quality of this ever-changing interaction and its' power to affect emotional perspective is at the core of my conceptual thinking.
The painter Giorgio Morandi said, "I believe that nothing can be more abstract, more unreal, than what we actually see." I want to explore that moment before we identify what we are seeing. I wish to ride the line between figurative and abstract and would like the narrative of the painting to be read differently by each viewer.
By exploring themes of nature and our relationship to each other and to other species, my paintings capture a quality of the fragility that exists in our natural lives. We are interrelated entities that occasionally consciously connect. Art, for me, is in part about furthering our conscious connection.
